For a day, dockmaster rules the waves

Johnny Weaver has a problem that the State Ports Authority can only envy: too many boats coming into Georgetown and too little dock space.

As of Monday, there were 107 boats registered in this weekend’s 22nd annual Georgetown Wooden Boat show. Thirty of those boats will be in the water.

“That’s 780 feet of boat and 500 feet of dock,” said Weaver, the Pawleys Island area resident who is the dockmaster for the boat show.

The show is put on by the Harbor Historical Association, which this year bought the ground floor of a vacant building on Front Street to house a maritime museum. Growth also prompted the organizers to commission two more floating docks, for a total of 10 that will expand dock space on the Sampit River in front of Francis Marion Park for the show.

Boats will also be displayed along Front Street, with power boats west of the park and sailboats to the east. Lining those up are also part of the dockmaster’s job, but parking trailers doesn’t provide the same challenge as tying up boats.

The 10 floating docks and a pair of barges provided by Ronnie Campbell of TowBoat US will be maneuvered into place Friday afternoon at the city dock. Weaver has a plan of the dock and a list of the entries. He used to make up detailed docking assignments. “The first boat that came in, it changed,” Weaver said.

He’s done the job so long that he knows that by 11 a.m. Saturday morning, the official start of the show, all the boats will be in place. “The fine tuning, that comes up on Saturday,” he said.

He gave a special award one year to an exhibitor whose boat was moved seven times in the course of the show.

Occasionally, exhibitors get dock space in some of the private slips that line the Georgetown Harborwalk, but those are full this year, Weaver said. So are all the marinas. “I think this is going to be our biggest year yet,” he said.

The show could use more temporary dock space, but its options are limited in part because no docks are allowed closer than 50 feet to the federally-designated shipping channel that runs up the Sampit River. That’s one of the channels that local and state officials hope to get dredged to help restore cargo traffic to the Port of Georgetown.

Many spectators come by boat, but they are also limited by a lack of dock space, Weaver said. Although they can anchor in the river, if they want to come ashore they’ll find the public dinghy dock taken over by the boat show.

Weaver’s work as dockmaster is made easier by the fact that a core group of exhibitors return to the show year after year. They usually get the same spot at the dock or on Front Street. “They plan their time around it,” he said.

But there can also be tense moments when wooden boats with their meticulously maintained finishes come into the dock. Weaver recalled last year that an 80-foot restored Navy patrol boat backed into its space, coming within a foot of the bowsprit of a sailboat.

Weaver himself once shared ownership of a wooden boat with Sid Hood, president of the Harbor Historical Association. The 1957 57-foot Grebe provided meeting space for boat show organizers in the early years, he recalled.

It was when he found himself refinishing the same section of deck two years in a row that he said he realized he needed to give up his share of the boat. “The idea of owning a wooden boat and the reality are very different,” Weaver said.

He has a couple of kayaks, a jon boat and a pontoon boat. None in wood.

A few of his favorites from the Wooden Boat Show include a 44-foot 1939 Elco yacht. “It was real pretty,” he said, recalling that the owner played music from the period while displaying the boat.

And there was a Simmons Sea Skiff, a working boat made in Wilmington, N.C. “It’s a classic North Carolina wooden boat,” he said. “You can either do the brightwork or paint it like a working boat.”

Then there are the Chris-Crafts, perhaps best known for classic wooden runabouts. Weaver got back into the wooden boat market with a 26-footer.

“I kept it for two years,” he said, but didn’t have the facilities to restore it. “I sold it for what I paid for it,” he added wistfully.

The next best thing to owning one may be rubbing elbows with those who do. Weaver isn’t alone in that. “There’s a lot of interest in this show,” he said.

Tara Hall Home for Boys, Coach Rick Barnes

GEORGETOWN - Jim Dumm has seen God's work in many different forms over 40 years at Tara Hall Home For Boys.

But this summer, a call seemingly "from heaven" changed Dumm's world--and that of the 12 boys who currently call Tara Hall home.

"(It) was just miraculous for us," said Dumm, executive director of the rural Georgetown County home for underprivileged youth. Dumm had spent much of the past few years, and the first half of 2011, wondering how he could help with the upkeep of running the home with outdated residence hall facilities and furniture that his boys used that was well past its prime.

"We had to modify programs and cut back in different areas," said Dumm. "The beds were about 15 years old and were handmade out of wood. The box springs and the mattresses were pretty well-worn. They were about 10 years old," he said.

That, plus worn-out carpeting, peeling paint, and even old TVs that only got three or four channels--and slack donations--made for a dim outlook at times.

But that all changed in June when Dumm said he got the call that changed everything--from a woman named Candy Barnes. She was visiting a hair salon while she and her family vacationed in DeBordieu Colony, and read about Tara Hall's plight in a magazine. When she told her husband, former Clemson University and current University of Texas Men's Basketball Coach Rick Barnes about it, they decided to help out.

Dumm said Barnes called and within days was on-site at Tara Hall with a contractor friend and plans to re-floor, re-paint, and generally make-over the entire residence hall. It all culminated over Labor Day weekend, when Barnes and other volunteers helped move new furniture into the dorms.

"They just really are dedicated to seeing that these boys have a first-rate chance at everything," said Dumm, who still can't help but smile on Tara Hall's fortunes lately.

In a quick phone conversation Thursday morning, Barnes told News13 he didn't want any publicity for the deed, and he and his family were inspired by what Dumm and his staff are doing at Tara Hall. Barnes brought his son to help and to spend time with the youths at the home this summer, and Dumm said Candy Barnes has also come by to spend time.

The new furniture inside the residence hall includes new beds for the students and the adult staff, along with new sectional couches and high definition TVs for the lounges. Dumm said Barnes even threw in satellite TV service and separate TVs so the boys could play video games in the lounges and in the rec hall. There are also new pool tables and tables and chairs in the rec hall, new floor coverings throughout, and coats of fresh paint on walls everywhere you look.

"Now we don't have to worry about the upkeep much, the day-to-day things," said Dumm.

Barnes will speak during a special open house event at Tara Hall on Thursday evening, October 6, at 7:00 p.m.

Georgetown has been a working seaport for more than 250 years, linking much of the area's history and culture to the sea. Come celebrate the rich maritime heritage of South Carolina's third oldest city and second largest port. This year's show will feature wooden boat exhibits, a boatbuilding competition, kid's model boatbuilding, boat raffles, maritime arts & crafts, food and music. These events will take place on the waterfront and in Historic Downtown Georgetown. Money raised through sales and donations will help fund the development of the Harbor Historical Association's maritime museum.
Featuring One of the Nation's Premier Wooden Boat Exhibits
An estimated 100 classic wooden boats will be displayed in the water, along the boardwalk and on Front street. Vessels ranging in size from kayaks to yachts, will be exhibited in eleven categories: row, canoe, kayak, surfboard, sail, inboard power, outboard power, classic sail -built prior to 1960, classic power -built prior to 1960, owner designed and built, and century class-100 years or older. Visitors will be able to meet and talk to wooden boat craftsmen,manufacturers and owners. Maritime arts, crafts and models will also be on display.

Boatbuilding Competition
The Wooden Boat Challenge will begin at noon under the big tent on Broad Street. Two-man teams will race to build a rowing skiff within a four hour time limit. At 5 pm the competitors will test their completed skiffs for seaworthiness in a rowing relay across the Sampit River. The teams will be judged on construction speed, quality of work and rowing ability. Cash prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. The three top scoring teams will be eligible to compete in the 2012 National BoatBuilding Championship.

Georgetown has its fair share of history and 57 state Historical Markers to prove it.
This weekend, No. 58 will be unveiled.
As of Saturday, anyone traveling along Front Street in downtown Georgetown will be able to read the story of the Union Navy vessel USS Harvest Moon thanks to the Arthur Manigault Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and Battery White Camp of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans.

In March 1865 the USS Harvest Moon sank when it struck a torpedo floated into the Winyah Bay by Confederate Capt. Thomas Daggett. Daggett built his torpedo in the second floor of a store at 633 Front St. in Georgetown.

The smokestack of the 193-foot Harvest Moon can still be seen at low tide in the bay and there will be a tour boat trip out to the site of the vessel after the unveiling ceremony on Saturday.

The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at 637 Front St. in front of the Rice Museum annex building, also known as the old Kaminski Hardware Co.

SOUTHERN SCENES-- A Confederate canon still faces Winyah Bay at Battery White, a large earthwork battery built around 1862 during the civil war on the current site of the Belle Isle Yacht Club, has been preserved and added to the register of National Historic Places. The battery was built to protect the Georgetown harbor which was recognized as important to defense of the state. The battery was abandoned late in 1864 by the Confederates and in 1865 Rear-Admiral Dahlgren of the flagship Harvest Moon reported the occupation of the battery and of Georgetown. As the ship made its way out of the harbor, it struck a torpedo and sank. A historical marker will be placed in front of the Rice Museum in Georgetown recognizing the event. Mark Rogers a local boat captain and home builder helped shape some great memories for a few children over the weekend by taking them out for a fun afternoon of fishing. Big redifsh, locally called channel bass, were the target. It was a slow start to the day, but Mark found the fish and put a big bend in the fishing rod. Douglas Miller with Big Marsh Charters was along for the ride and a helping hand.
The fall is a great time of year here at DeBordieu. There are plenty of activites and memories to be made.

Georgetown’s Harbor Historical Association unveiled the poster for the Wooden Boat Show Thursday night.

And, the group also announced that it is buying the first floor of the long-closed “New Store” on Front Street. The building will house the Maritime Museum. That’s been the reason for the Wooden Boat Show for more than 20 years.

The Georgetown Times will have more on that purchase and plans for the museum in Monday’s issue.

Everyone who views “Headin’ Home,” the painting created by artist Angela Tiller for use in the 2011 Wooden Boat Show poster, is amazed to learn Tiller has been painting for only eight years.

As a child, the first medium the Myrtle Beach native used to express her artistic nature was inspired by her father, Marion Askins’, penchant for creation.

“My father was a frustrated artist,” she said on June 13 while seated at a cozy private table in the back of Georgetown’s River Room Restaurant. “He was always very artsy and inclined to art. Maybe he would have pursued that had he not had a family to support. During my whole life he was involved in some kind of little art project. He sketched, made candles, did sand art, made cakes.”

It was over cakes where father and daughter’s artistic inclinations meshed.

“My first medium was cake decorating,” Tiller said. “My mom would bake the cakes, and then Dad and I would mess around decorating them. I actually did them on the side as an income supplement, doing things like sculpting people’s heads and making buildings.”

In addition to learning how to decorate cakes, the teen worked in nursing homes and at the former Ocean View Memorial Hospital in Myrtle Beach. That led to private care at Myrtle Beach Manor, which progressed into a career in the healthcare field when she studied surgical technology and earned her Registered Nurse license. She also married an ophthalmologist named Ged Tiller, and they had busy lives with their blended family and working.

In 2003 Tiller retired, and while at a family get-together her sister-in-law suggested an activity.

“She said, ‘Let’s paint. Just copy me and do what I do. Mix this and put it here, add that there,’ and I just did what she did. By the end of the weekend I had three little paintings that were good enough to inspire me to keep going.”

Her interest was ignited, but when attending her first art workshop the teacher said she had to “figure out what your passion is.”

“He said to look around the house and see what you have. He said, ‘You need to learn art in all areas, but at some point you need to find a focus.’ I started thinking about a portrait artist I like named John Singer Sargent — he paints in a very brushy realism. I like that look, like his work. Then I started looking around at the art around our house, and every one pretty much has a figure in it. I know I really like people because of my nursing career, so it was natural to paint portraits. I have started to really try and focus on figures and faces, and at the same time still try and develop other areas of my art.”

During her eight years as an artist, Tiller has immersed herself in the craft by attending many workshops held by artists such as Michael Shane Neal and Everett Raymond Kintsler, and for four years a major part of Tiller’s development was spent studying with Elizabeth Bronson of McClellanville. As her talent increased, family and friends and neighbors in their community north of Georgetown called DeBordieu took notice of her work. Realizing she could handle the task with skill, she was asked by the Wooden Boat Show committee to produce a painting for their annual poster, which is a regional honor.

Tiller’s first reaction was to study up. She and Ged are no strangers to boats — they traveled and lived on a sailboat for three years, and then spent the past five years building and then traveling on a custom power catamaran.

With her nautical and art experience as a foundation, she researched regional wooden boats from 100 years ago. She studied the works of South Carolina artist Gilbert Maggioni, who took bird carving beyond decoys to pieces of art that would sit on a pedestal, and one of Maggioni’s students, Grainger McCoy.

Maggioni had written about and depicted oyster boats used in Lowcountry areas in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Often manned by two African-Americans — one older, one a boy — the flat bottom crafts with sails were scrabbled together from available materials like leftover wood scraps, tree saplings and flour sacks. They had flat bottoms so they could get into shallow water areas where there were oyster beds. Trailing behind the oyster boat were two small wooden bateaux that, once the oyster boat sailed to a likely harvest spot, the two oystermen boarded and used to get right up on oyster beds. When the little boats were full of oysters, they were dumped into a netted hold on the bigger boat.

“There are very few if any photos of these boats,” Tiller said. “I painted this one depicting late in the day, coming home on Winyah Bay at sunset. I wanted to depict the flat bottom oyster sloop because it’s so much a part of South Carolina History. It’s one of the only boats really indigenous to South Carolina, and Maggioni had the studies and drawings and writings about it. It really is South Carolina’s boat.” Tiller’s painting is based on an original drawing by Gilbert Maggioni in Tidecraft: the Boats of South Carolina, Georgia and Northeastern Florida, 1550-1950, c 1995, by William C. Fleetwood, Jr.

Her oil on canvas titled “Headin’ Home” is masterful, and makes people who see it wonder what the next eight years of Tiller’s artistic evolution will bring.

The fish were biting yesterday afternoon. I ventured out for a couple of hours to enjoy DeBordieu's pestine estuary, North Inlet.

Champions Tour member Jay Haas and PGA Tour members Bill Haas and Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey are among the pro golfers scheduled to be at the private DeBordieu Club in Georgetown for the second annual DeBordieu Club Celebrity Pro-Am on Nov. 7-8.

The tournament will benefit the S.C. Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, is sponsored by Adams Golf and is not open to spectators.

The event will feature up to 30 teams comprised of four golfers along with a touring pro, celebrity or local PGA club professional. Others scheduled to participate include former New York Yankee Bobby Richardson, Coastal Carolina football coach David Bennett, Nationwide Tour pro Tommy Biershenk, eGolf Tour pro Jay Haas Jr., and 2010 RE/MAX Senior World Long Drive champion Bobby Wilson.

Former PGA Tour pro and current rules official Dillard Pruitt is also committed to the event. Pruitt is the brother-in-law of Jay Haas, who is married to his sister, Jan. In 2008 Pruitt’s wife, Fran, lost a lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis at the age of 46.

The event has a Texas Scramble format in which the best drive of the fivesome is selected and each player completes the hole with his own ball from that spot.

The team’s best two individual net scores per hole will count.

For an entry fee of $1,000 per four-person team, players receive a tournament gift bag, on-course lunch and beverages, a practice round, two tournament rounds, eight tickets to both the auction pairings party and awards ceremony, and clinics by Wilson and Gainey.

For $2,000 per team, players also receive an Adams driver or two Adams hybrids. Players on teams entering before Sept. 15 receive an additional 20 raffle tickets.

Seafood Harvest!

Simple but Good

I went flounder gigging the other night. It is not something that I regularly do. Two of my great friends and I ventured out into the creek around 10pm. It is a wonderful experience to be on the water at night. The sites and SOUNDS are amazing. Recent rains had stained the water. We managed to gig 6 nice flounder. It made for a fine Sunday night meal.

While on the topic of food I wanted to share another great lowcountry meal that my wife, Wynne, and I shared with another couple. Local seafood is hard to beat. Some lump crab meet made into crab cakes, fresh shrimp, tomatoes, lima beans, and white wine...even some champagne!

North Island one of the densest sea turtle nesting beaches in SC
This year marks the first time the entire length of North Island in Georgetown County has been surveyed for sea turtle nests during the nesting season. The number of nests documented through the end of June (which represents approximately 54% of the nesting season) is 95. If nesting effort remains strong, North Island could have as many as 200 nests, possibly more. This means North Island would be tied with Kiawah Island as the second densest sea turtle nesting beach in South Carolina (based on nests per kilometer).

North Island is part of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center Heritage Preserve. It hosts the largest sand dunes in South Carolina and provides quality nesting habitat for sea turtles and shore birds. North Island is designated as a barrier island wilderness area, where no activities that would be detrimental to its primitive state are allowed. Follow nesting on North Island in real-time.

Considered one of the most outstanding gifts to wildlife conservation in North America, the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center was willed to DNR in 1976 by the late Tom Yawkey. After its transfer to DNR, the Center was dedicated as a Heritage Preserve by the South Carolina Heritage Trust, a program that works to preserve natural diversity in South Carolina. The Yawkey Wildlife Center, which includes North Island, South Island, Sand Island and most of Cat Island, is composed of 31 square miles of marsh, managed wetlands, forest openings, ocean beach, longleaf pine forest and maritime forest. Dedicated as a wildlife preserve, research area, and waterfowl refuge, the Yawkey Wildlife Center has become a haven for waterfowl, nongame and endangered species alike. The diversity of habitats support over 200 species of birds, rivaling the variety and rarity documented at the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. Visitation by the public to the Yawkey Center is limited due to the protected nature of the Heritage Preserve.

Because the Yawkey Wildlife Center's 16 miles of beach are undisturbed, they provide protected feeding, nesting and resting areas for numerous seabirds, shorebirds and wading bird species, as well as excellent nesting locations for the federally threatened loggerhead sea turtle and the diamondback terrapin. Shorebird species such as the Wilson’s plover, the American oystercatcher and the federally threatened piping plover utilize North Island’s healthy dune ecosystem. Year-round federally endangered birds found at the Yawkey Wildlife Center include the wood stork and the red-cockaded woodpecker. Other bird species of interest include the peregrine falcon, bald eagle, black rail, black skimmer, barn owl, loggerhead shrike, northern bobwhite, American bittern, painted bunting, gull-billed tern, brown pelican, and the least tern. The Yawkey Center is also home to a large population of American alligators and white-tailed deer and is directly south of Hobcaw Barony and DeBordieu Beach. Portions of the Yawkey Wildlife Center are in the boundaries of the North Inlet – Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR), one of 28 protected sites around the nation committed to stewardship of estuaries through research and education. The North Inlet-Winyah Bay NERR is operated by the University of South Carolina and has headquarters at the Baruch Marine Field Laboratory on Hobcaw Barony. The Reserve also partners with the Belle W. Baruch Foundation in operating the Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center, located at the entrance to the Hobcaw property. Center exhibits and programs feature the area’s rich natural resources, history and research conducted at Hobcaw. It is also part of the Carolinian-South Atlantic Biosphere Reserve.

The DNR Marine Turtle Conservation Program is responsible for managing and protecting sea turtles in the state of South Carolina. This program has several all-encompassing components: management, monitoring, research, and education. This program implements management techniques to mitigate activities that may impact sea turtles and provides training and support to approximately 30 projects and over 1100 volunteers across the coast who protect nests and document sea turtles that wash ashore (strandings). DNR staff members also perform necropsies on fresh dead strandings and respond to live strandings in need of care. As of June 30, there have been 2,545 nests documented in the state. We enjoyed great weather and plenty of activites for the 4th of July celebration at DeBordieu. It is a busy day for us. We start the day at the DeBordieu parade.

Summer is Here! Enjoy Pawleys Island, DeBordieu and Georgetown

What does summer mean to you?

I think of the beach, the boat, fishing, some golf, picnicking and eating well. I think of big cumulus clouds and the occasional thunderstorm...fried chicken, tomato sandwiches, and cold beverages. I think of staring at the ocean and the tidal creeks of our lowcountry marshes. I think of children having fun diggin in the sand, jumping waves, throwing the ball, riding bikes, catching their first fish or crab.

The summer is here and all of the great things that come with it!

Its time to go fishing, go picnicking, to eat that firied chicken, to play catch, and take a kid fishing.

Now is the time to be enjoying the beach, the club, and the creeks!

Its great to be in such a wonderful place where you can enjoy all of these things.

I heard a song once about a place like DeBordieu where men become boys. DeBordieu is indeed a place where men become boys for the day, for the week, for the whole summer.

MISSION: To Salute and Honor America’s Armed Forces and their families on the 4th of July. VISION: To create an accessible opportunity for South Carolina beachgoers to honor our armed forces by organizing a “Salute from the Shore” of a military flyover of the entire South Carolina coast each Independence Day. Our vision is to unite participants in a synchronized Salute to our troops that will be shared across the nation and around the world. WHO WE ARE: We are a 501(c)3, non-profit group of patriotic South Carolinians who simply want to honor our armed forces. Working in partnership with the Town of Pawley’s Island, we recognize it is because of their service and sacrifice that we are able to celebrate our freedom from the very shores they endlessly strive to protect. HISTORY: On July 4th, 2010, the first “Salute from the Shore” was witnessed by hundreds of thousands of people. The inaugural flyover - assisted by a C-17 from Charleston AFB - resulted in an overwhelming outpouring of personal messages, stories and support from those who participated. Touched by the emotional reaction to the event, the organization resolved to grow the event for 2011 and beyond. WHAT IS THE SALUTE? The Salute from the Shore is a unique opportunity for individuals, friends, and families to salute our armed forces while celebrating Independence Day on South Carolina beaches. Our role, in partnership with the Town of Pawley’s Island, is to organize and promote a flyover of four F-16s on the 4th of July that will stretch the entire length of South Carolina’s coast. In 2011, four members of the 77th Fighter Squadron “The Gamblers” of the 20th Fighter Wing based at Shaw AFB are proudly providing the flyover. We will capture as much footage of the flyover as possible from the air and from the ground for inclusion in a video that will be posted for all to see. WHEN IS THE SALUTE FROM THE SHORE ? The Flyover starts July 4th at 1:00 PM. WHERE IS THE SALUTE? The Salute will be visible from every beach in South Carolina. It will start at the NC state line at 1:00 and fly south, ending at Hilton Head Island at 1:20. However, be sure to arrive early to prepare your Salute so we can capture you on video from the Air! Helicopters will be filming certain beaches starting as early as noon.
WE NEED YOUR HELP! Participants on the shore will be encouraged to Salute the flyover by wearing and waving red, white, and blue. We’re asking participants to capture themselves “Saluting” the Flyover and our troops in images and videos and to share their stories at www.SalutefromtheShore.org and elsewhere. Our final 2011 video “Salute” will include selected pictures and videos from participants. For more information, visit www.SalutefromtheShore.org.
GOALS:

2011 Event Information

WHO: Salute from the Shore, LLC a nonprofit, grassroots group has created a special opportunity to Salute America’s Armed Forces from the beaches this July 4th. Join us as we host the 2nd Annual Salute from the Shore.
WHAT: Air Force F-16s from Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, SC have committed to execute a low altitude Flyover of the SC coast as participants Salute from the Shore from the shore wearing and waving the red, white and blue. Our goal is to have 1 million people on the beaches and to capture the event on video from land and from the air. A key factor in our success for participants submit their own Patriotic videos, pictures and comments to salute@salutefromtheshore.org or to our Facebook Fan Page at “Salute from the Shore.”
We are asking people to get as creative as they can so that their Salute can be seen from the air, and we encourage participants to take pictures and video of the Flyover with people or places in them so that our armed forces will see not merely planes in the air, but the crowds of people supporting them!

A helicopter will video the crowd on the beach between Surfside and Pawley’s Island, so be sure to wear and wave your red, white and blue and think of ways to supersize your salute for the camera so the troops will be able to see you!

WHEN: Monday, July 4, 2011

TIME: Precise times will be determined closer to the event, so stay tuned for details. However, we anticipate the Flyover will take place between 12:00 and 3:00 PM.

WHERE: At the Beach! The F-16s will be visible from every South Carolina beach, so be sure to show up and Salute!

You’ve got to love seeing a fish feeding nose-down, completely oblivious to everything else around. The full moons of summer bring high tides that flood the spartina grass flats, enabling us to search high in the marsh for tailing redfish. The “redneck” in me really digs being able to hunt and fish at the same time. The fish weren’t tailing as much as usual tonight, but we spotted several fish gorging themselves enough to get a few shots. -Jay Nelson

Buyers Better Hurry: Rates Reach New Lows For the sixth straight week, fixed mortgage rates inched down, reaching new lows for 2011. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 4.60 percent this week while the 15-year mortgage averaged 3.78 percent, Freddie Mac reports in its weekly mortgage market survey. Meanwhile, the National Association of Home Builders reported this week that home affordability reached its highest level in 20 years, making the purchasing power for home buyers even better during this traditionally prime buying season. Here’s a closer look at mortgage rates:
30-year, fixed-rate mortgage: Averaging 4.60 percent this week, it was down slightly from last week’s 4.61 percent average. Last year at this time, 30-year rates averaged 4.84 percent. The 30-year fixed rate mortgage hasn’t been under this week’s 4.60 percent average since early December 2010 when it fell to 4.46 percent.
15-year, fixed-rate mortgage: Averaging 3.78 percent this week, it also was down from last week’s 3.80 percent average. Last year at this time, the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 4.21 percent. It has not been under this week’s 3.78 percent average since late November 2010 when it fell to 3.77 percent.
5-year adjustable-rate mortgage: Averaging 3.41 percent this week, it was down from last week’s 3.48 percent average. A year ago at this time, the 5-year ARM averaged 3.97 percent.

Sea Turtles: DeBordieu Hobcaw SCUTE

Turtle tracks where the femaile came in in, dug her nest, laid eggs, and then departed.

Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) nest on South Carolina beaches May through October. S.C.U.T.E. which stands for South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts is one of 21 volunteer sea turtle protection projects along our coastline under the direction of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. The 60 mile S.C.U.T.E. area extends from North Inlet in Georgetown County to North Myrtle Beach. The six miles of DeBordieu and Hobcaw beaches typically account for 40-50% of the nests in this area.

We had our first nest this morning on Hobcaw (photo)! Bill, substituting for Rolando, had a natural nest 75 yds. north of 15. He collected one egg for the DNA study. Let the turtling begin!

As you know, DeBordieu Real Estate is again sponsoring our program this season. Their funding has made it possible for us to have new mile markers on Hobcaw and each of us to have a new t-shirt. They have also provided us with a website to educate the public about our program and let everyone know on a daily basis what is happening with the nesting season here at DeBordieu and Hobcaw. There are some bugs yet to work out on the website but check it out at: http://www.debordieuscute.org/. Please try and carry a camera with you on your walks for photo opportunities. DeBordieu asked that we post a photo if possible with our Daily Updates.

Another feature of the website is tracking a tagged sea turtle. DeBordieu Real Estate also provided the funding for us to adopt a sea turtle from seaturtle.org. We are the proud parents of 'Salty', a 50+ year old loggerhead outfitted with satellite telemetry in May 2010 in Casey Key, FL. Follow her travels on our website! Now it will be so easy when people interested in our program want to know about our season....just refer them to http://www.debordieuscute.org/. I often feel blessed when relaxing on my porch and observing the activity just outside of my home. Several wood duck pairs have been in and out of the pond that is about 100 yards away. Four weeks ago a hen wood duck came swimming out from under some bushes. I noticed something around her. I grabbed my binoculars and saw several little fluff ball ducklings 10-12 of them.

I also recently noticed a nest in a pine tree across the fairway (I live on the golf course hole #3). Obviously this is a big nest being able to see it from a distance. I thought it might be some of our local bald eagles. I finally saw that a pair of redtailed hawks were building the nest.

I have continued to watch it and just this week saw the small heads of two baby hawks.

This bird life is in addition to the deer that we see daily (including the piebald deer:..see a picture I took of it to the right).

If you have read any of this blog before, you know that I enjoy all of the wildlife our area offers.

I recently discovered the two webcams below that the North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve host.

The blue birds have already hatched but have not left the nest.

The wood duck is sitting on her eggs that should hatch any day now.

Grand Strand Golf: South End to DeBordieu

Spring is here. It is time to knock the rust of the clubs and get ready for golf season. This has been a cold and wet winter. We have not been able to play as much golf as normal.
The tour pros are already playing, but The Masters weekend signals the start of the season for me and certainly makes me want to play.
DeBordieu's golf course is already in good playing shape. It will only be improving from this point. Our member guest weekend will be here soon.
Pete Dye and his son, P.B. Dye, designed a beauty. Golf at DeBordieu can be described as an exhilarating 18-stop nature tour. The Dye's designed a challenging, but playable course that winds through the stunning marshland of DeBordieu and is defined by its signature 17th hole - voted "number one" on the Grand Strand.

Hot Design Trends Debut at International Builders’ Show

Smaller spaces, energy efficiency, Earth tones, and outdoor entertainment are all the buzz as the latest design trends debut at the International Builders’ Show in Orlando this week.

A survey of 2,000 consumers conducted by Better Homes and Gardens found that buyers don’t want any “wasted space” in their next home. They are seeking more value for their dollar, said editorial director Jill Waage, who presented the study’s findings Thursday. Affordability remains a high priority as well as energy efficiency, which was ranked highest to 68 percent of the consumers polled.

“Consumers are once again dreaming about their next home as well as planning ways to make their current home reflect their personal style and needs,” said Waage. “They are also setting priorities and watching their wallets in the process.”
The top ranked living space features listed by consumers are a separate laundry room, additional storage space with walk in closets or build-ins, a home office or workspace, outdoor living areas, at least one bathroom with its own private bath, and everyday eating space in or close to the kitchen.
“Today’s family wants a hive area where they can move seamlessly from mealtime to tech time to game/entertainment/hobby time to homework time,” said Waage.
Kay Green of Kay Green Design echoed Waage’s findings in her International Builders’ Show presentation Friday. “People want more of a clean line look with contemporary interiors,” Green said. “Stainless steel continues to be popular.”

Here are more design trends taking hold in 2011:
■Outdoor amenities such as grills, sinks, showers, and entertainment areas.

■Freestanding tubs with a separate stand-up shower in the bathroom.

■Color schemes – Earth tones, blues and blue greens, chocolate browns.

■International design influence, especially Asian design in both décor and functional products.

■Ceiling details accenting rooms within open floor plans.

■Media space for flat screen TVs and gaming systems, and living areas wired for technology.

■Organizational features, built-ins, and smart storage areas throughout the home.

■Universal design features incorporated in subtle ways.

■Artistic tile in kitchens and baths, often emulating organic patterns found in nature.

■Energy efficient products – washing machines, dish washers, toilets, and showerheads.

■LED lighting incorporated into sinks, showers, and medicine cabinets.

The Christmas Tree Lighting is one of my most favorite events at DeBordieu. We have the opportunity to see our neighbors and share some excellent food and spirits. It is always well attended.
This year was special for me as my 21 month old little boy, Chandler, is quickly learning about Christmas. Our family's new addition, Robert Peace, was bundled up and enjoying the festivities as well.

Chandler lifted everyone's Christmas spirit with a little dancing.

As I mentioned earlier, Chandler is learning about Christmas, but he is not so sure about Santa, quite yet.

Monday, Dec 6

The day started as we had feared, artic cold. The course opened around 11:00 a.m. with players registering and playing practice rounds. The golf course was in fantastic shape with the greens rolling fast and true. Adams Golf was front and center with their support of the event by putting on a demo day and sponsoring a clinic from the 3 time World Long Drive Champion, Bobby Wilson. His audience, bundled together, saw a fantastic show of personality mixed with a raw unmatched athletic ability. His mastery of trick shots and long bombing drives was quite entertaining. His show concluded with a drive that went 340+ yards and was summed up by Wilson saying ………“You don’t go that far on vacation”!

Monday evening’s tournament pairings party was a special evening. The beach club was consumed by a movement of support and anticipation for the pairings lottery and Tuesday’s activities. After a fantastic arrangement of food and refreshments, the group was introduced to Catherine McCloud, the Chair of the National Cystic Fibrosis Board of Trustee’s and a CF parent. She spoke magically of the strides being made in research and development that will lead to a cure for CF. She also reminded the room that 91 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to the research initiative and that the life expectancy for CF suffers continues to increase because of the foundations efforts and the hard work and generosity of the individuals in attendance. The evening continued with an exciting lottery that paired the teams with our invited Celebrities and Professionals. The evening closed with Tom Shortt sharing memories of his son Lee, and thanking the attendees for their support.

The sun rose to reveal an even colder day than Monday. The catering staff fed all a fantastic filling breakfast as we waited for the course to open. About 10:30 the range opened to another Adams demo day and a great short game clinic from Champions Tour Professional, Dana Quigley. After our celebrity and professional introductions and a brief overview of the rules, we headed out on to the course. The temperature and conditions did not let up much. Despite this we had some great scores turned in after play.

After returning to the club, attendees enjoyed a fun night of great food, cocktails, casino gaming, and auctions. The highlight of the evening was an exhilarating live auction, which was directed by Mike Cunnington. Friendly bidding battles developed on almost each item that came up for auction, which made for a fun environment. The big winner, on this night was Cystic Fibrosis with over $20,000.00 raised for their research initiatives.

The evening closed with Will Shearer (CF Parent) presenting awards of appreciation and delivering a moving speech about how the Inaugural DeBordieu Club Celebrity Pro-Am and your support is adding days to his children’s lives.

The fishing is good year round here at DeBordieu. The fall and winter are excellent seasons to be on the water. DeBordieu was recently mentioned in the Charlotte Observer's fishing report.

Redfishing remains very good even with the recent cold weather. Expect good fishing opportunities for these hard fighters.
The speckled trout fishing has been better this year compared to last. north Inlet and Winyah bay have been good areas to target these lovely fish.

Home Sales Could Enter 'Virtuous Cycle'

Consumer confidence and business spending are key to whether the U.S. housing market will move into a virtuous or a vicious cycle in 2011, NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun told a packed audience at the Residential Economic Outlook Forum Friday in New Orleans.

After the downturn, the housing market has clawed its way back to a point of near stability, Yun said, with the pace of new foreclosures easing, sales moving toward historically normal levels and prices on a national basis gaining modestly.

At the same time, affordability remains strong. He said all of the price excesses from the housing bubble have been squeezed out. In San Diego, for example, buyers today would pay $1,564 a month in mortgage payments for a house that at the height of the boom would have cost them $2,833 a month.

The broader economy is also showing positive signs, with businesses enjoying strong profits, sitting on huge cash reserves, and even adding jobs. Yun predicts this positive trend to continue into 2011, with existing home sales reaching 5.5 million units, prices rising a modest 1 percent, and the U.S. gross domestic product increasing to about 2.5 percent.

“We are entering a virtuous cycle,” he said. But for the positive trend to continue, he added, businesses will have to start spending some of their cash to fuel job growth at a far greater pace than they’re doing now. Currently, businesses are adding jobs at a pace of about 100,000 a month. That needs to grow to about 400,000 a month for unemployment to start shrinking.
The scenario will be far more negative if businesses continue to sit on their cash. In that case, sales will fall, inventories will rise, the high rate of foreclosures will resume, and the cost to the federal government of bailing out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will surge.
Federal Reserve Governor Thomas Koenig, who shared the dais with Yun, said the Fed’s continued effort to spur the economy, most recently through a $600 billion bond buying program, is understandable given concerns over the slow pace of growth. But the continued subsidization of the market could unleash inflationary forces.
Yun said he sees possible evidence of inflation building, but it’s not visible now because the housing-cost portion of inflation measurements is holding down prices.

DeBordieu's southern neighbor is Hobcaw Barony. Below is some information pulled from their website. This is a lovely and historical piece of property that is well worth visiting.

History of Hobcaw Barony

A 17, 500 acre research reserve, Hobcaw Barony is one of the few undeveloped tracts on the Waccamaw Neck. The Native Americans called it "hobcaw," meaning between the waters. In 1718, the land became a colonial land grant, a barony. Sold and subdivided into plantations extending from the river to the sea, Hobcaw Barony was part of the great rice empire until the turn of the 20th century.
Bernard M. Baruch, Wall Street financier and advisor to presidents, purchased the property comprised of 11 former plantations in 1905 for use as winter hunting retreat. He invited presidents, prime ministers and politicians to hunt duck, turkey, deer, quail, foxes and hogs in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
After 50 years, he sold all the land to his daughter and the time of her death, she created a foundation to manage the land as an outdoor laboratory for the colleges and universities in South Carolina.
Swamps, abandoned rice fields, pine and hardwood forests, salt marsh and barrier island environments provide habitat for many native animals of the coastal plain. Historic sites include Hobcaw House, rebuilt in 1930 on a bluff overlooking Winyah Bay; Bellefield House and stables, built in 1936 for Belle W. Baruch; and Friendfield, a 19th century slave village used until 1952.
Although privately owned, Hobcaw Barony is now used as a research reserve by the colleges and universities of South Carolina. Restricted access is allowed through tours and programs offered by the foundation and universities.

This three hour van tour requires little walking but includes highlights of Hobcaw's history. Once eleven plantations, the property was bought in 1905-07 by Bernard Baruch, native South Carolinian and Wall Street financier. At this winter retreat he and other millionaires hunted ducks, deer and wild turkeys throughout the 17,500 acres. The van stops for a tour inside his 1930 mansion that played host to politicians, generals and newspapermen as well as Winston Churchill and President Franklin Roosevelt.

In addition to Hobcaw House, tours include a drive by the home and stables of Bellefield Plantation, Friendfield Village, the last 19th century slave village on the Waccamaw Neck and travel a portion of the original King's Highway. This is a report from the big weekend from DeBordieu's head golf pro, Shawn Roper.

2010 Club Championship & President's Cup

EGA = Exciting Golf Action, that is what we've had over the last three days of play.

FRIDAY

The Ladies Division of the Club Championship started on Friday with a semi-finals match pitting Jennifer Currie against Marty White. This match went the distance and was decided on the 18th with Currie winning 2up.

The Men's Division Championship Flight had some great first round matches:

Defending Champion David English held off David Bruce for a 7 and 6 win;

Carl Fisher edged Marion Moore for a 4 and 3 win; Our Senior Champ, Steve Milligan defeated Mike Andrews for 4 and 3 win; Scott Edwards held off John Miller and won the match 1 up on the 18th.

The Men's 1st Flight of the Club Championship also saw great matches: Peter Roy outlasted Johnny Rowell for a 1up win on 18; Danny Aderholt held off Greg Currie for a 3 and 2 win; George Wilson defeated Randy Habeck for a 6 and 4 win.

SATURDAY

The sun rose Saturday morning and brought his friend "the Wind" to the golf course. The Men's and Ladies' Championship Flight saw great matches none the less.

The Ladies played the finals on this day, pitting Defending Champions Peggy Clary versus Jennifer Currie. Clary flew out of the gates, took a big lead and held on for a 6 and 5 win. Congratulations to our 2010 Ladies Club Champion - Peggy Clary.

In the Men's Semi's, David English was firing on all cylinders as he took care of Dr. Carl Fisher 6 and 5. In the other semi-final, we saw a re-match of the Senior Club Championship from September, Steve Milligan versus Scott Edwards. History did not repeat itself as Edwards edged Milligan 2 and 1.

The Men's First Flight Semi saw George Wilson fire 35 on the front to take a huge lead on his way to a 9 and 8 win over Danny Aderholt.

Day 1 of the 2010 Ladies' Presidents Cup saw tuff conditions yet pretty good scoring. Peggy Dellasega took the day 1 lead with a net 72 followed by Carol McCann with 73 and Jody Bennett with 76.

Scores from Day 1 in Men's President Cup were close. Dick McCann and Phil Dellasega were tied with net 73's, Dr. Kent McGinley with 74, and Don Henry, Lou Cervini, and Bill Cowan all tied with 75's.

SUNDAY

Mother Nature brought us perfect conditions today.

In the Finals of the Men's Club Championship was Defending Champion David English versus Scott Edwards. Edwards made the turn with a 1up lead but bogeys on 10 and 13 turned the match. English made solid pars at 14 and 16 giving him the lead he needed to finish off Edwards 3 and 1. Congratulations to our 2010 Men's Club Champion - David English

The Men's 1st Flight Finals included Peter Roy and George Wilson. Their match was back and forth and all square thru 14. Wilson's birdie 3 on #15 halted Roy's momentum, and the match finished 2 and 1. Congratulations to our 2010 Men's 1st Flight Champion - George Wilson.

Day 2 of the Presidents Cup saw much better scoring. In the Ladies Division, Peggy Dellasega held off Carol McCann(149) and others to take the title, finishing with a 2 day total of 147. Dick McCann followed a solid net 73 with a fantastic 68 (141) to take the Men's title over Phil Dellasega (148)

‘Perfect weather’ for Wooden Boat Show Georgetown, South Carolina Georgetown Times

As The Georgetown Time reports, it was perfect weather for the Georgetown Wooden Boat Show. The show is one of my favorite events for Georgetown. My wife and our 19 month old took a stroll down Front Street and enjoyed the vendors, wooden boats, and beautiful afternoon. Take a look at the article and mark your calendar for next year. DeBordieu Creek Night

Creek Night is one of the many wonderful events at DeBordieu. The focus on this big cookout is seafood. Residence get together harvest, shrimp, crabs, oysters, and fish to cook. DeBordieu's outdoor pavilion is the perfect location for the dinner. North Inlet provides the bounty. This estuary system has miles of meandering creeks and provides access by boat to the Atlantic Ocean.

The turn out is big, and the food is delicious.

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to fish with a new friend that was traveling up from Florida, Eddie Oliveras. Jay Nelson arranged our little fishing outing. Eddie, Jay and I share the passion of fishing as well as a sincere interest in photography. Eddie takes it a step further. He has created a little photo essay/journal entry called Lowcountry Hooky about his visit to the lowcountry.

DeBordieu's Uncrowded Beach

I took a walk this morning at sunrise on DeBordieu beach. DeBordieu proper has over a mile and a half of beach shoreline. The southern walk is the most special to me. From the southern most home the beach stretches nearly another 2 whole miles before reaching North Inlet. This two mile stretch has no beach homes. It is a prestine beach. The land is owned by The Belle W. baruch Foundation-Hobcaw Barony.

Maybe 1/2 mile down the beach is this very old remaining structure of a groin (wall built perpendicular to the shoreline intended to trap sand flowing in the alongshore current).

On my way back, I came across this osprey. He seemed to be waiting for the sun to get higher so that he could go hunt for breakfast.

The Grand Strand and the south end of the Waccamaw Neck do vary a little relative to the real estate market. Myrtle Beach is simply different than Pawleys Island. The real estate market here at DeBordieu would be even more of a variance. Yet this is still news that is worth reporting and seeing. Call or email me to discuss the DeBordieu market. We have seen considerable price reductions, we are much busier than many people would imagine, and as a client put it to me today, money is cheap.
